PRESS RELEASE
A vision for Canada Water
In July last year the community in Rotherhithe were presented with a draft development framework which showed a vision of a high density town centre with many unacceptable features not least filling in Canada Water itself.
The Canada Water Campaign was formed.
The Canada Water Campaign believes that the community must spell out clearly what sort of area we want to live in and what sort of features we think planners must consider when inviting development proposals. And this is it!!
Vision Statement
The Canada Water Campaign is committed to the following:
Sensitive development of the Canada Water area preserving natural attraction to wildlife whilst acting as a waterside village centre and a focus for the community.
Welcoming development which will enhance the Canada Water areas attraction as a pleasant residential area close to the centre of London with well maintained parks, water features, gardens and community facilities for young and old alike.
Supporting development directed towards a safer community and at social inclusion of areas adjacent to Canada Water, in particular those surrounding Albion Street and Lower Road.
Promoting creation of the infrastructure which will reduce local traffic congestion and improve access to the Canada Water area.
Rejecting high density town centre or intensive high rise office development proposals which would adversely impact on the above.
We believe that this statement is positive and builds on the real needs that have been identified from the wide range of people and organizations that the Canada Water Campaign is involved with.
The intention is that the Canada Water Campaign will formally adopt this vision at a General Meeting to be held on:
Tuesday 20th March 2001 at 19.30 at Alfred Salter School
All supporting the Canada Water Campaigns aims will be welcome at the general meeting. Thereafter the vision statement, if adopted, will be submitted and considered as the framework around which future development should be planned at the first formal "Canada Water Consultative Forum" meeting on the 3rd April 2001.
